The deadline for NPR's Tiny Desk Contest was last night, 11:59 pm EST. As of 11:00 I had one complete take, but the audio was distorted, and the video was poorly lit. So I tried again, and again, and again. Take 90 or so was at 00:14. Missed that deadline.
WHAT WENT RIGHT?
I think I ended up with a decent song, "Movie Musical". Sean and Geri liked the lyrics.
The guitar and backing tracks blend ok on the video.
I learned how to use the Canon XF300 camera.
My attitude was good, even though I was disappointed I missed the deadline.
THINGS TO PRACTICE
Singing live with live guitar. Especially new songs where I'm not solid on the lyrics, melody, or guitar part.
Mixing for live recording. Because I can hear my voice in my head, I tend to mix my voice too low. Need to find the right balance without having to stop recording, play it back. Justin said he'd help mix, so that may be a short term solution.
Don't cut the deadline so short. I wrote one and a half other songs, and kept writing because they weren't good enough. So lyrics weren't final until Thursday 26th.
Extra people require extra time. I was hoping the song would be a duet. It may be a duet, or even a full band. But it's too late for the contest.
Focus. I was thinking about clearing calendar for travel, possible set lists, other videos. I should have just kicked out the best I could do by deadline. Also, there were plenty times I SHOULDN'T have been thinking about the song, but I was.
